On one particularly hot afternoon, Tommy sat under a leafy tree counting his day's earnings while humming a cheerful tune, when he overheard a man walking by speaking in a worried voice.
"A thief just escaped from the jewelry store!" Tommy immediately stopped counting, quickly put his money back in his pocket, and asked the man curiously, "When? Where did this happen?"
The man answered as he hurried along, "Just now! He stole a valuable gold necklace and got away. They say he has a beard!" And the man continued on his way in a rush.
Tommy was about to head to the jewelry store to learn more details when a customer approached him and said calmly, "Boy, polish my shoes nicely. There's no hurry." The man glanced at his wristwatch.
The customer was wearing an elegant blue suit and a red tie, looking like an important wealthy man. Tommy sat down immediately to polish his shoes, though his mind was still thinking about the theft.
The man placed his left foot on the shining stand. Tommy took his yellow cloth and quickly cleaned the shoe, then opened his polish tin, took some cream, and spread it on the shoe with his small brush.
From the corner of his eye, Tommy saw two policemen approaching the area. He was eager to ask them about the theft, but the customer suddenly seemed to lose his patience.
"You foolish boy! You're not doing your job properly!" the man shouted while quickly glancing at the policemen. "Polish my shoes until they shine! I still have five minutes before the show ends."
Tommy trembled with fear and thought: 'He must be an important and influential man. He might complain about me to the police!' So he focused his attention on polishing the shoe carefully.
After finishing the left shoe, Tommy said, "The other shoe, sir." The man placed his other foot on the stand. "Hurry up, boy, there are only two minutes left before the show starts."
Tommy thought to himself: 'Strange! Just moments ago he said he wasn't in a hurry, and now he's in such a rush!' Tommy quickly cleaned the shoe and applied the cream.
When he was about to polish it with the cloth, he noticed something sticking out from the back of the shoe. 'What's this?' Tommy wondered in amazement. He bent his head to see more clearly. 'My goodness! It's a gold necklace!'
The man said as he lifted his foot from the stand: "That's enough, boy, it's time." Tommy continued polishing the shoe with the cloth while the man searched in his wallet for money.
Quick as lightning, Tommy tied the ends of both shoelaces together, stood up without taking the money the man offered him, and rushed toward the policemen.
Tommy heard the man shouting behind him: "You rascal! I'll get you! But what's happening?" The man fell flat on his face when he tried to walk because his shoes were tied together!
While the man was trying to get up, Tommy returned with the two policemen. They caught him immediately. Yes, he was the thief! The gold necklace was found in his shoe, and his fake beard in his pocket. He was taken to the police station.
Of course, Tommy was praised for his quick thinking and cleverness. The police and the jewelry store owner rewarded him, and his school also honored him with a medal for his bravery and intelligence.
