🦢 The Story of the Ugly Duckling
🥚 A Strange Egg in the Farmyard
Once upon a time, a mother duck was sitting on her nest, waiting for her eggs to hatch. One beautiful spring morning, the shells began to crack. *Tap, tap, tap!* Five adorable little ducklings, soft as fluffy yellow cotton balls, waddled out. But a sixth egg, much bigger than the others, remained tightly closed at the bottom of the nest.
An old friend of the mother duck came to visit. She looked at the giant egg and said:
"Oh my! That egg is much too big to be a duck egg. It looks like a turkey egg!"
"How can I be sure?" asked the worried mother duck.
"It is simple," her friend replied. "If he cannot swim after he is born, he is a turkey. Turkeys hate water!"
But the egg was not a turkey egg. When the shell finally cracked, a large, grey bird came out. He immediately jumped into the pond and swam beautifully, just as well as his brothers and sisters.
Unfortunately, being different made his life very hard. As soon as the farm chickens saw him, they teased him: "Look at that duckling, he is so ugly!"
The geese laughed and honked: "What an ugly little duckling!"
From that day on, the sad nickname stuck. Whenever they called him, it was always: "Ugly little duckling, come here!" and when they wanted him gone, they yelled: "Go away, ugly little duckling!"
The poor bird began to believe he was truly ugly. No one wanted to play with him or swim beside him. Even his mother grew tired of him.
Sad and rejected, the little duckling decided to run away one night. Sadly, no one on the farm even noticed he was gone.
❄️ A Long and Hard Winter
The ugly duckling travelled very far. All he wanted was to find a friend who would accept him just the way he was. But the world outside was cold and unkind. The wild ducks mocked him, and the wild geese yelled at him as he passed.
Alone and heartbroken in the middle of a frozen marsh, he sighed:
"Will I ever find a friend? Will I ever be happy?"
One afternoon, just as he was losing hope, he heard a loud rustling of wings in the sky. Looking up, he saw magnificent white birds flying high. They were swans! They had long, elegant necks, and their feathers shone like silver in the sun. The little duckling watched them fly away, his heart beating with wonder.
Winter arrived, long and freezing cold. Food became hard to find, and the little duckling was often very hungry. One night, the cold was so sharp that the pond water froze all around him, trapping him in the ice. Fortunately, a kind farmer and his dog passed by and rescued him just in time.
Finally, spring returned. Nature woke up, and the lake became a happy, lively place again. But the little duckling still stayed hidden in the reeds, sad and alone.
One day, unable to bear the loneliness anymore, he spread his wings. To his great surprise, he realized they had grown large and strong! He flew high into the sky, far away from the marshes, and landed in a beautiful garden.
Right there, in the middle of a clear pond, he saw the majestic white swans floating gracefully. The little duckling felt a deep sadness, thinking he could never be as beautiful as them.
🦢 The Wonderful Surprise
The next morning, the little duckling gathered his courage and swam toward them. *"I will go to these beautiful birds, even if they chase me away because I am too ugly to live near them,"* he thought.
He approached slowly, bowed his head toward the water, closed his eyes, and whispered:
"Do what you want with me, I know I am hideous."
"Hideous?" the swans said in surprise. "But have you looked at your reflection in the water?"
"There is no need, I know what I look like," replied the duckling without opening his eyes.
"Look!" the swans insisted. "Look at yourself!"
The little duckling slowly opened his eyes and looked down at the clear water. His heart leaped with joy!
What he saw in the water was no longer a clumsy, heavy grey bird. He was a magnificent white swan with a long, graceful neck! During the long winter, he had completely changed without even realizing it.
"I... I am just like you..." he whispered, tears of happiness in his eyes.
Just then, some children ran to the edge of the pond to throw bread to the birds. They clapped their hands and shouted happily:
"Oh, look! There is a new swan! He is so beautiful—he is the most beautiful of all!"
The ugly duckling finally understood that he had never been a duck. He was born a swan, and this was where he belonged. His days of sadness and loneliness were gone forever.
