Timmy the Kitten's Important Mittens

Timmy the Kitten's Important Mittens

Timmy the kitten was famous for one thing: he was forever losing his woolen mittens. His grandmother didn't mind at all. She dearly loved to knit, so she would just sit down, smiling happily, and knit a brand-new mitten to replace whichever one he had lost.

But Timmy's mother and father did mind. "You must learn to be more careful, little one," they would tell him gently but firmly. It did no good. So at last, they told Timmy that if he ever came home with one mitten missing again, he would not be allowed to go to the big magic show. This was a dreadful thought!

Grandmother gave him a new pair of bright blue mittens. Timmy promised his parents he would be careful. The next day, he went out to play in the snow. He kept checking his paws every few minutes, patting the soft wool to make sure both mittens were still there.

While building a snowman, he heard a faint "cheep, cheep." He looked under a nearby bush and found a tiny baby bird, shivering in the cold, having fallen from its nest. Timmy's heart ached for it. How could he help?

He remembered his promise, but then he looked at the shivering bird and knew what he had to do. Very carefully, he slipped off one of his warm, woolen mittens and gently tucked the little bird inside. The mitten became a perfect, cozy little nest. He carefully carried it, climbed the bush, and placed the bird safely back in its real nest.

Filled with joy for having saved the bird, he raced toward home to tell his parents. Halfway there, he looked down in horror! One paw was bare! He had forgotten his mitten under the bush! His heart pounding, he turned and ran back as fast as he could.

He found the mitten right where he'd left it, and quickly put it on, sighing with relief. He ran home and held up both paws proudly. "I didn't lose them!" he cheered, and then told them the story of the little bird. His parents looked at him with pride, not just because he had kept his mittens, but because he had used one to do something incredibly kind. That evening, they all went to the magic show, and it was the best one ever.
