The Merchant and the Donkey's Salty Trick

Can being too clever backfire? This is a fun story about a donkey who thought he was smarter than his master, but learned the hard way that honesty is always the lightest load to carry.

📝 The Merchant and the Donkey's Salty Trick

On a bright and beautiful spring morning, a merchant named Nasir loaded his donkey, Jasper, with heavy bags of salt to take to the market to sell. The merchant and his donkey set off on their way. They had not walked far when they reached a river that crossed their path.

Unfortunately, Jasper the donkey slipped and fell into the river! As he scrambled up the bank, he noticed something strange: the bags of salt on his back felt much lighter! The salt had dissolved in the water.

There was nothing for Nasir the merchant to do but return home, where he loaded Jasper with new bags of salt. When they reached the slippery riverbank again, the donkey deliberately jumped into the water, a mischievous glint in his eye. And so, the salt was wasted once more.

By now, the merchant understood his lazy donkey's trick. "Alright, Jasper," he thought to himself, "I will teach you a lesson you won't forget." When he returned home for the third time, the merchant loaded the donkey's back with bags full of light sponges.

The pair set out on their trip for the third time. Upon reaching the river, the donkey, thinking he was very clever, threw himself into the water again, expecting his load to become lighter.

But what a surprise! Instead of becoming lighter, the sponges soaked up the water and became as heavy as rocks! Jasper could barely stand under the immense weight.

Nasir the merchant laughed as he helped him out and said, "You foolish donkey! Your trick has been discovered. You should know that you cannot fool people too many times."

Values and Lessons Learned

  • Cleverness vs. Wisdom: The donkey was clever in his trick, but the merchant was wise in figuring it out and teaching a lesson.
  • You Can't Fool Everyone All the Time: A trick might work once, but repeating it will get you found out.
