The Invention of Glass
Once upon a time, in an ancient land by the sea, there lived people who made beautiful things from clay, stone, and wood.
But there was a big problem!
When people wanted to close their windows, they couldn't see outside... And if they opened them to see, dust, cold, and wind would come in!🍃🪟
In a small town called "Sidon" on the Mediterranean coast (in what is now Lebanon), lived a boy named Namir. He helped his father, who worked in making pottery.
One day, while the people were preparing food on the beach, someone brought a block of "rock salt," or "natron" as they called it then, and placed it near the fire on the hot sand. No one paid attention, but Namir was watching!
🔥 Suddenly, something strange began to happen...
The natron mixed with the sand, melted from the heat, and started to flow like water but sparkle like stars! When it cooled down a little, it became a solid, transparent object!
👀 Namir shouted: "Dad! Look! It's a stone... but I can see through it!!"
The father was impressed by what he saw and said: "I have seen something that looks like magic... but it's not magic, it's science made from fire and sand!"
And so, that was the first time glass was made by accident, with a mix of sand, natron, and a strong fire.
💡 From that day on, people started experimenting. They added fine sand from the sea, natron, increased the heat, and poured the mixture into molds... That's how they made glass containers!
🌍 As the years passed, this craft moved from Sidon to ancient Egypt, where the pharaohs used glass to make bottles and perfumes, and then to Rome, where they made windows for the first time.
🚢 Then sailors carried the glass with them to the Levant, Persia, India, and then to Europe, until the city of Venice in Italy became famous for the most beautiful clear and colored glass.
👦 As for Namir? He grew up and became the first "glazier" in his area. He taught children how to turn ordinary sand into windows to see the sun and stars!
Lessons Learned
- Glass is made from sand, fire, and some chemical ingredients.
- The first people to invent it were the Phoenicians (in the area of Sidon today), by accident!
- Glass is important because it is used for windows, glasses, containers, and even in smartphones!

Suggested Activities
- Research the different types of glass and how each type is made.
- Draw a colored glass window or a beautiful glass vase.
- Try to make a simple glass model with clear clay or melted sugar (with adult help).
