Freddie the Sleepy Firefighter

Freddie the Sleepy Firefighter

A Brave Firefighter with a Big Problem

In a cozy fire station, surrounded by shiny red engines and neatly coiled hoses, lived a firefighter named Freddie. Freddie was one of the bravest and most willing firefighters in the whole city. He loved his job more than anything! But he had a secret problem: he was a very, very deep sleeper. When the loud fire alarm rang in the middle of the night, all the other firefighters would leap out of bed, but Freddie would just snuggle deeper under his warm blankets.

He was always the last one to wake up and the very last to jump onto the big hook-and-ladder truck. One night, he was so slow that the truck's engine roared to life and started to pull away just as he scrambled on. It was a close call! The Fire Chief looked at him with concerned eyes. "Freddie," he said gently, "Your bravery is unquestionable, but speed is crucial. We need you with us from the start." Freddie felt a knot of shame in his tummy. He knew he had to do something.

That night, Freddie couldn't relax. He paced back and forth in the quiet dormitory. "This can't happen again!" he told himself. He even thought about not sleeping at all, but he knew that wouldn't work. Just then, a chilly little breeze whistled up through the opening for the brass fire pole. Freddie shivered, and in that shiver, he had a brilliant idea! He remembered he could never, ever sleep when he was cold. "Not a single wink!" he cried happily.

With a clever grin, Freddie took the edge of his warm blanket and tied it firmly to the blanket on his friend's cot next to him. Then, he hopped into bed and fell asleep. Deep in the night, the world exploded with noise: CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! The fire alarm! Instantly, all the other firefighters leaped up. They threw back their blankets, and with a mighty WHOOSH, Freddie's blanket was yanked away too! The sudden, shocking cold hit him like a splash of icy water. Br-r-r-r-r! His eyes flew open. He was awake! In a flash, he was dressed, down the pole, and was the very first firefighter on the hook-and-ladder, his face beaming with pride.

The Fire Chief watched him, a wide smile spreading across his face. From that day on, because Freddie was so wide awake, on top of being so brave and willing, everyone knew it wouldn't be long until he was promoted to the splendid position of Fire Chief!
